Detailed description of Stone Mountain Golf Course, Lakemont Course

Stone Mountain Golf Course is a Public, 36 hole golf facility located in Stone Mountain, Georgia. The facility has two 18-hole golf courses. They are The Lakemont Course and The Stonemont Course.

The Lakemont Course opened for play in 1988. The course was designed by John LaFoy.

Both courses are scenic and located in the Stone Mountain State Park. These courses are home to an abundance of wildlife and afford spectacular views of the mountains. The narrow Stonemont Course features tree-lined fairways. The Lakemont Course is more open and was built around a lake.  Water hazards come into play on six holes. Both courses have greens that are undulating. The terrain is quite hilly, so carts are mandatory.

Lakemont Course __________

The front 9 holes of the Lakemont Course wind around Stone Mountain Lake, with six holes having water in play. The back 9 offers beautiful holes with rock outcroppings and four holes where water comes into play. LaFoy's penchant for mounding and dramatic bunkering is evident throughout the course. The dramatic elevation changes offer a unique ambiance that appeals to every golfer.

Blue tees: par-71, 6,444 yards, 71.5 / 134
White tees: par-71, 6,008 yards,  68.5 / 129(M), 74.1 / 135(M)

Day 65 - 100 days, 100 courses (Friday, May 17, 2019)

Wonderful welcome from Marriott Golf with fundraising sign in lobby and pro-shop. Matt Sim, the GM of Golf, greeted me at the counter saying "I recognize you from Instagram". My first celebrity sighting.

I played the Lakewood course which had an incredibly hard and beautiful par 5 along the water as an opening hole. The first 5 or 6 holes continued along the water.

If you play here remember everything breaks to the mountain. Shot an 85 but lost 3 balls.

Would travel: 60-120 Miles, Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again

Truly nice looking Golf Course. Didn't play it but walked it as a caddy. Nice open Fairways with well-manicured greens. It was hilly but not as hilly as some courses I have played. I have two draw backs to let you know about. First very small practice range. Second the putting green in by the clubhouse is about a 13 or 14 on the stimpmeter. The actual greens are only about a ten or an eleven. One thing I really liked was that I saw no hidden hazards. The hazards were very visable. Certain to return.

Bottom line: I would play again, Average course for the area

The greens are either diseased or just poorly maintained, and the sand bunkers have not been repaired since last week's rains. Management should check the scorecard yardage against the tee box markings and correct one to match the other. The ranger is active and makes regular rounds to maintain player time and course policy. This is a great course layout with many challenging holes and the declining conditions from high volume traffic, but the current conditions of greens and sand traps really impact the course ratings.

Would travel: 10-20 Miles, Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, Fair priced based on quality and competitive area pricing

Too bad greens at both public courses I played were suffering from fungal infections.

The biggest negative comment to be made is that both Stone Mountain courses have the worst quality sand material of any golf course I have ever played.

Stone Mountain also suffers from a golf disease that inflicts all public courses in this area - golfers either do not care or do not know how to repair ball marks or rake bunkers.

Would travel: 10-20 Miles, Not Vacation Worthy

Course is always in good shape. Greens are great considering the winter season. Lakemont is laid out very nicely across all 18 holes. I entertain and have "business outings" at Stone Mountain Park and have been very satisfied with the location, golf course and amenities it provides.

Would travel: 30-60 Miles
Bottom line: I would play again, Better than average course for the area, Ranks with the best in this price level, Best course in the area, Fair priced based on quality and competitive area pricing
